Artist Spotlight #7: KRISTINE SCHOMAKER
Rhizomatic Arts is proud to feature members of our Sustainability Network who are doing good in their communities through their creative and professional practice. KRISTINE SCHOMAKER is not only a visual artist and art historian--she also runs a PR and management agency, provides space for artists to present their work at the Brewery Arts Complex (where she lives), and edits an online magazine! In middle of all of this she took time to share her thoughts with us here.
Kristine! Tell us a little about your creative and professional practices. (You do so much!)
I'm immersed in art. I'm a philosopher who uses the visual language of art to make sense of the world. [See her portfolio at http://kristineschomaker.net/.] I'm also an art historian, entrepreneur, artist manager for Shoebox PR and editor of an online art magazine, Art and Cake. I run an experimental art space, Shoebox Projects, hold art salons and critique groups and strive to build community around like minded artists and art influencers.
How do you organize your hybrid career life, as an artist-entrepreneur?
My art practice keeps me always immersed in the contemporary art world. I am constantly researching new artists and influencers who shape our visual culture. This allows me to keep up to date on what's new and exciting for my clients. Organizing my hybrid career is a constant juggle and balance. I'm actually still figuring it out myself.
What would a sustainable career look like for you?
A sustainable career would include collaborating with other influencers and movers and shakers to create a vibrant thriving community of people getting things done.
What do you love about your work?
I love being part of the art world conversation. I love being immersed in a community of passionate people who dare to dream and who aren't afraid to be bold, brave and brilliant. I love living with art, learning the history and philosophy behind it and continuously engaging and educating myself through it.
What's coming up next for you?
I am looking forward to 2017 being my best year yet. I am creating new work for the Brewery Artwalk and will be showing one of my new media videos at the MARS Festival, both in April. My artists are extremely busy, so I will be attending many art events including the upcoming art fairs. I have several exciting partnerships in the works, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what the future holds.
